An elderly woman was not hit by a bus in Devizes town centre, locals claim.
Emergency services were called to an incident involving a person sustaining head injuries in The Market Place at around 4.30pm on Tuesday (9 July).
In a statement, Wiltshire Police confirmed that a woman, aged in her 80s, was hit by a bus.
It said: “We attended a collision in the Market Place, Devizes at approximately 4.30pm yesterday.
“A woman in her 80s was hit by a bus and is believed to have sustained a head injury. The road was cleared by 5.50pm.”
However, locals have claimed that she was not struck down – rather she fell over.
One resident said: “A lady of mature years was crossing the road, and panicked slightly when she realised that traffic was approaching.
“As she went to step up the kerb, she missed her footing, and fell backwards into the road.
“The bus driver saw her fall, and stopped his vehicle in order to offer her assistance.
“Nobody struck her in any way, she was just badly shaken, and wanted to get on her way.
“The paramedics attended to her, and the poor lady was obviously embarrassed by all the attention.”
A witness who helped at the scene said: “I witnessed everything aswell as administered first aid.
“No fault of anyone’s. She couldn’t quite grasp the curb with her footing. If anything the bus prevented her from taking the full impact to the floor.”
