An elderly driver who mowed down two children could be back driving in 2027.
Harold Small knocked down two six year olds when he drove through a red traffic light in Beechcroft Road, Swindon, on 11 December 2023.
The 89-year-old, of Corsham Road, Penhill, pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention when he appeared at Swindon Crown Court last month.
Today (Tuesday), he was sentenced for the offence – which left one of the schoolchildren with a fractured arm, who the second sustained cuts and bruises.
Small received a 22-week prison term suspended for 12 months.
He was also banned from driving for 12 months – meaning he could be back behind the wheel by as early as February 2027.
DC Alex Way, from the Serious Collision Investigation Team at Wiltshire Police, said: “I know this incident has had a lasting effect on all those involved, both physically and emotionally.
“I am pleased that today has brought some justice for the families and will hopefully prevent further victims.
“This case is a stark reminder to all drivers to pay closer attention to their driving, especially around schools where young children are using the roads and pathways.”
