A Wiltshire Police call handler has been scooped a national award for his work championing disability inclusion within the force.
Dave Grainger, based in Devizes, received the Staff Member with Diverse Abilities Award at the National Disabled Police Association Awards during the 2025 Disability in Policing Conference on Monday 29 September.
The co-chair of Wiltshire Police’s Disability Support Staff Network, he plays a key role in embedding disability inclusion into core policing practices.
Most recently, he influenced decisions around the new enquiry office at Police HQ to help ensure it is as accessible as possible.
Deputy Chief Constable Mark Cooper, who attended the awards ceremony, said: “We are incredibly proud of Dave for the work he does supporting those with neurodivergent conditions and other disabilities, both within the organisation and in the communities we serve.
“The award is thoroughly well deserved, and I was delighted to be there to see Dave recognised on a national stage.
“We know there is still much to do at Wiltshire Police to improve support for those with disabilities, but we have passionate individuals like Dave driving this forward. It’s vital to celebrate the positive work already happening.
“Huge congratulations to Dave.”
Alongside his award win, Mr Grainger also received finalist certificates in three categories: Disability Advocate of the Year, Leading with Diverse Abilities, and Inspiration to Others.
Last year, he took part in the We Rise programme, a year-long development initiative designed to support colleagues from under-represented and minority groups within Wiltshire Police. His passion for intersectionality has continued to grow since then.
Upon receiving the award, Mr Grainger said: “I am very passionate about sharing lived experiences and welcome opportunities to speak with senior leaders within the Force to highlight how my autism is not a barrier to working in the Control Room.
“I cannot put into words how honoured I am to have received this award and to have been nominated.
“I’m deeply grateful to the many colleagues within Wiltshire Police and beyond who have supported me, especially during times when I’ve been balancing the demands of my role in the Control Room with the additional work I willingly take on to help others.
“Although my name is on the trophy, it wouldn’t be there without the support, kindness, and care shown by others within the organisation.”
