A pedestrian who was hit by a car in Chippenham ‘remains in hospital with a plethora of injuries’.

The 21-year-old local man was crossing the A420 Bristol Road via a pedestrian refuge island when he was struck by a white Volkswagen – which was on the wrong side of road.

Numerous people rushed to the young man’s aid following the incident near Hathaway Medical Centre shortly before 8pm on Friday evening (18 November).

He was taken to the Royal United Hospital in Bath, where he was found to have sustained a number of injuries. Wiltshire Police described his wounds as “reportedly minor” – something the family dispute.

His father told Wiltshire 999s that they included several broken ribs, a broken finger, deep lacerations to his head and abrasions and bruising across other parts of his body.

Doctors’ further investigations found that his son also suffered lacerations to his kidney, which resulted in internal bleeding. He remains in hospital for treatment and monitoring today (Monday 21 November).

“He was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time”, his father added.

Two men were arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving following the incident.

One of the men was also arrested on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of a road traffic collision and failing to provide a specimen, whilst the other was also arrested on suspicion of drug driving.

Police cordoned off the route between Hungerdown Lane and Bumpers Farm Roundabout for approximately three hours whilst the incident was dealt with.
