Carer who held clean license for 22 years disqualified for drink driving

A carer has been banned from holding a license after being caught drink driving.

Claire Tarrant, 40, appeared before Swindon Magistrates’ Court by video link from Gablecross Police Station earlier this week.

It was the Crown Prosecution Service’s case that she had been driving a Renault Clio with two male passengers on-board in Downton Road in Penhill, Swindon, on 23 August last year.

In custody, on an evidential breath test machine, she blew 78 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Defending herself, she entered a guilty plea for the offence.

Tarrant, of Downton Road, told the court she had left an abusive relationship and developed a drinking problem which resulted in her drink driving, but she accepted it was wrong. She claimed she had received help for her issues and no longer has an alcohol problem.

Asking magistrates to take into account her mitigation, she added that she was a full-time carer for her disabled child, had held a clean license for 22 years and did not have a criminal record.

An 18-month disqualification from driving was imposed on Tarrant, which would be reduced by 137 days if she completed a drink-drive rehabilitation course. She was also fined £150, ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £34 victim surcharge.
