Two Pakistani students died in an outbuilding in Swindon ‘after inhaling carbon monoxide’, a source close to the pair claims.
Emergency services had rushed to reports of two unconscious men at a property in Morrison Street, Rodbourne, at around 2.45pm on Tuesday (11 November).
It’s said the deceaseds, both Pakistani nationals aged 32 and 34 respectively, had come to Britain legally on student visas.
‘They were students living the UK, they came legally from Pakistan on student visas’, the source said. Adding: ‘Their families in Pakistan have been informed.
‘Their deaths were because of gases to do with the heating system inside the house. I don’t think they had carbon monoxide detectors.’
Police previous labelled it a “medical incident” and have confirmed that the deaths are being treated as non-suspicious. No further information about that happened was given.
It’s been confirmed that the pair were found in an outbuilding at the rear of the home – with fire crews utilising specialist equipment to detect dangerous gases in the air.
It’s not yet clear whether the claimed exposure to carbon monoxide was accidental or deliberate. It’s unlikely more will come to light before the inquest.
Adding to a previous statement, a spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “As a precautionary measure, firefighters in breathing apparatus were used to make an initial examination of the affected property, with gas monitoring equipment used to check that it was safe for other emergency responders to enter.
“This was at the request of the ambulance service, and we then handed over to the police. There was no fire at the scene, and no risk to the wider public.”
Previously, a Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: “We can confirm that two men were found deceased at an address in Morrison Street, Swindon last night.
“Ambulance paramedics were called to the scene by a member of the public after the two men, aged 32 and 34, were found to be unresponsive.
“Although formal identification has yet to take place, the men’s next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this time.
“Precautionary examination of the scene confirmed that there was no wider risk to the public and their death is being treated as non-suspicious.
“Members of the public may notice increased police presence in the area, in order to provide further community reassurance.”
