A man’s been stabbed in the leg during an altercation in Swindon town centre this morning.

Police were called to reports of a man being assaulted at just before 2am, and despite a search of the area, no casualty was found but later found him at Great Western Hospital.

Dryden Street was closed in both directions as CSI investigated the scene, but the road reopened at before midday. Detectives also visited the scene before the reopening.

The man, who is in his 30s, is in a stable condition in hospital.

One local resident recalled to police officers about a ‘loud scrap’ she overhead before 1am.

Det Insp Helen Jacobs, from Swindon CID, said: “I know people will be alarmed, but I want to reassure everyone that we do not believe there is any risk to the wider public.

“Our investigation is still in the early stages but we are already piecing together a picture about the events which led to this incident and we have a number of lines of enquiry to follow up.

“You may see a police presence in and around Curtis Street while we carry out forensic work and house-to-house enquiries.”

Wiltshire Police ask anyone with information to call them on 101 immediately. Or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111, where information can be left anonymously.
