A pair of birdwatchers sparked a police response in Swindon this morning after local residents reported them for simply standing in the street with their binoculars out.

Concerned about their motives, residents called the police at 12pm, when the couple – in their 70s – were stood next to their parked car, on Eastmere which overlooks Liden Lagoon, for more than 30 minutes.

Two units arrived at the scene a short time later.

It transpired that the birding couple, from Walcot, were waiting for a family member to bring them a spare set of keys after locking theirs in the car. Officers didn’t identify any offences and left the scene.
