Malta is an attractive, and popular holiday destination. It’s warm summers, mild winters, diverse localities and the options between tranquil and vibrant living, means it has something to suit everyone. Additionally, there is a wide selection of property types too, ranging from apartments and maisonettes to farmhouses and palazzos. With so much choice, figuring out where to rent for your holiday can be a challenge. Let’s take a look at some of the best locations depending on your holiday needs.
Family getaways
If you’re looking for something that meets the needs of a family holiday, then there are plenty of options. Areas like Mosta, Naxxar, Lija, Mqabba, Attard and Qormi are great places to start looking. Many of these areas such as Naxxar, Attard and Lija are more centrally located and offer a suburban comfort. If you’re renting long term, then Naxxar is also home to some excellent schools. Despite being away from some of the more active areas, they’re still a short distance from main areas, making them ideal for families.
Mellieha is also an excellent choice for family-friendly living. In the north, it’s packed with activities. And it’s close to the shallow, child-friendly, Ghadira Bay.
Keeping it modern
For those who are eager to stay in a more modern area, one that’s closer to businesses, then both Sliema and St Julian’s (they’re neighbours) are the best spots to look at. Both locations make living in Malta, albeit for a short time, very easy indeed. There are plenty of shopping, entertainment and dining options. Sliema, for instance, is home to a stunning promenade, while St Julian’s is packed with a vibrant nightlife. Both areas are especially popular for young professionals or international visitors thanks to the array of exciting evening activities available.
Renting on a budget
In Malta houses for rent are in abundance. While some are pricey, there are areas where you can get cheaper holiday rentals. Msida and Swatar are great options for this and offer a range of affordable apartments. The areas are more suburban, hence the lower prices, but are still close to important amenities including the Mater Dei hospital.
There are also options for cheaper rental options with a sea view. Head up to the northern parts of Malta and there are some popular beaches here where you can enjoy cheaper accommodation. Impressively, while being located near to these popular destinations, areas such as St Paul’s Bay, Xemxija, Qawra and Bugibba all offer more affordable apartments, all with a sea view. As these are further from Valetta than many other options, this area is an ideal solution to those looking to make the most of their beach time, and partake in some of the many water-based activities. This northern area in particular, is suited to a more laid-back option as well as those with families.
Enjoying the culture
If you’re looking for a more peaceful and sedate holiday, one that encompasses some of Malta’s impressive history, then Mdina and Rabat are some of the top spots. Also known as the Silent City, Mdina is filled with timeless architecture, narrow streets and old houses from noble families. It’s also a great place to getaway from the more frenetic towns and cities on the island, as well as to enjoy a more authentic local culture.
Alternatively, you can simply choose to stay in the capital city itself. Valletta is packed with Baroque architecture, and historical streets. Not only that, but it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site allowing you to really step back in time and see what life here used to be like. It’s a more bustling vibe than some of the other areas, but comes with modern amenities, huge amounts of charm and a lot to do. It’s actually a great place to stay if you’re looking to blend shopping and dining, with some quaint local charm, though it is more pricey than other areas.
Finally, you can opt for visiting, and staying in, The Three Cities, Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua, all of which are becoming more popular. These areas are full of maritime history and offer excellent harbour views. It’s also a great way to experience the more authentic Maltese lifestyle with traditional townhouses, a great community atmosphere and a great backdrop.
