Call to report sexual harassment happening on Wiltshire’s streets

A call has been made for Wiltshire residents to report sexual harassment in public spaces.

Charity Crimestoppers says people can contact them safely and anonymously – and their call could make a difference when it comes to supporting victims and tackling harmful behaviour across the county.

Sexual harassment is often referred to as ‘unwanted sexual behaviour’ or ‘street harassment’ and includes a wide range of acts such as flashing and catcalling as well as sexual assault. The charity warns that when such behaviour is left unchallenged can escalate into more extreme and dangerous forms of abuse.

Examples of sexual harassment include unwanted touching or rubbing in crowded areas, stalking, ‘cyberflashing’, intrusive questioning, watching pornography in public spaces, and ‘upskirting’. These behaviours are all criminal offences and can leave victims feeling humiliated, intimidated, or unsafe.

Statistics show that one in three women has experienced sexual harassment or offences while using public transport, and one in six people were targeted when they were aged just 10 or younger.

Beth Simpson, Gloucestershire Regional Manager for Crimestoppers, said sexual harassment goes unchallenged too often. The campaign is an opportunity for Wiltshire residents to provide anonymous information that could help safeguard others and bring repeat offenders to justice.

“By speaking up – safely and 100% anonymously to Crimestoppers – you could help protect someone from further harm and prevent future incidents,” she continued.

“Crimestoppers’ campaign encourages anyone who witnesses or experiences sexual harassment to report it anonymously, providing details such as the perpetrator’s description, location, and the nature of the incident.

“This approach is designed to overcome barriers to reporting and ensure that more incidents are brought to light, supporting victims and disrupting perpetrators.”

The campaign in Wiltshire is supported by funding from Sovereign Network Group (SNG).

How to report sexual harassment to Crimestoppers

Crimestoppers is urging the public to be alert to sexual harassment and act if they suspect someone is being targeted.

Wiltshire residents can report concerns by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or completing a secure online form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.

The charity guarantees complete anonymity – callers are never asked for their name, and they will not be contacted by police or required to attend court.
