Dogs are at risk as Wiltshire Council confirms that a dead seagull had bird flu.

An investigation revealed that a herring gull tested positive for the HN51 strain of avian influenza after its body was found in Devizes.

Local dog wardens have been out putting up posters – which warn of bird flu – along the Kennet and Avon Canal and at The Crammer.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Council warned that dogs, and other mammals, are at risk from catching the infectious disease.

They said: “Following a confirmed positive case of HN51 Avian Influenza by the Animal and Plant Health Agency in a deceased herring gull in Devizes, our dog wardens will be putting posters up around the crammer and along the canal to remind the public to remain vigilant.

“Avian influenza virus can infect mammals including dogs.

“If your pet is sick, tell your vet if it has been in contact with wild birds.”
