A man is in critical condition after ‘setting himself on fire’ in a Wiltshire street.
Emergency services raced to reports of the serious incident unfolding in Wilton Road, Salisbury, at around 10.30pm last night (Tuesday, 18 March).
A 38-year-old man was found to be well alight, having reportedly set himself on fire.
Members of the public tried to help at the scene outside the Co-op Food store – but little could be done.
Firefighters extinguished the man as Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance landed nearby. Critical care medics, alongside ambulance and fire crews, provided urgent treatment.
The severely burned casualty was taken to Salisbury District Hospital, where he remains in a life-threatening condition.
The road was closed in both directions for around two hours while 999 crews attended the incident.
A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police confirmed that the man’s next of kin has been informed.
Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said that two Salisbury crews were in attendance, and “helped with casualty care” until 11.34pm.
A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service added: “We sent one double-crewed land ambulance, an air ambulance, and an operations officer to the scene.
“We conveyed one patient by land ambulance to Salisbury District Hospital.”
