Two pensioners have been seriously hurt in a four-vehicle crash near Marlborough.

Emergency services were called to a road traffic collision on the A346 through Savernake Forest at around 1pm this afternoon (Tuesday).

The incident involved a lorry, three cars and a van at the turning for Browns Farm – with Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance landing at the scene.

A man and woman travelling together in one of the vehicles, both aged in their 70s, sustained serious and potentially life-changing injuries.

A man, the driver another vehicle, sustained a broken thumb. All three people were taken to hospital for treatment.

It’s understood a lorry had slowed or stopped in order to take a right turn into Browns Farm, with two vehicles stopping behind it.

A third vehicle is believed to have struck the back of the queue, and subsequently, one vehicle has impacted an oncoming car.

However, a full-scale forensic collision investigation is underway to establish exactly who was at fault and how the smash came to occur.

The road is closed in both directions between Marlborough and Cadley, and isn’t expected to reopened until gone midnight.

Statements from emergency services

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: “At around 1.15pm today on the A346 Salisbury Hill near Savernake we responded to a multi-vehicle collision.

“A man and a woman in their 70s have been taken to hospital to be treated for injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening.

“The road remains closed in both directions while recovery and enquiries take place.”

A Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 1.20pm today (21 January) to Salisbury Hill, Marlborough to assist the police with a four-vehicle road traffic collision.

“Two crews attended; one from Pewsey and one from Swindon.

“Crews used hydraulic cutting equipment to help provide better access for the ambulance service. Our stop came in at 2.42pm.”

A South Western Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 13:19hrs on Tuesday 21 January to a road traffic collision in Marlborough.

“We sent four double-crewed land ambulances, an air ambulance, an operations officer, a doctor, and a tactical commander to the scene.

“We conveyed three patients by land ambulances to Salisbury District Hospital.”
