Three people have been injured in a ‘racial’ attack outside a Swindon supermarket.

Two men and a police officer were hurt during an incident outside Asda at the West Swindon Shopping Centre on Tuesday evening (26 November).

A man, aged in his 20s, was reportedly racially abused and hit with a bicycle seat by a male suspect at a bike rack near McDonald’s at around 5.25pm.

They moved towards the main entrance of the building, where a third man, aged is his 30s, saw the disorder and attempted to break it up.

The male suspect then repeatedly struck the Good Samaritan over the head with the bicycle seat – leaving him with serious injuries that required hospital treatment.

As police officers and PCSOs arrested the male suspect, he bit one of them.

A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of inflicting grievous bodily harm, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and Section 4A of the Public Order Act.

Following the attack on police, he was further arrested for common assault and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He remains in custody for questioning.

Forensic investigation work was carried out at the scene until around 10pm. The area was cordoned off as a crime scene, but later lifted.

Police are appealing for witnesses who were in the area between 5.20pm and 5.45pm. If you saw what happened, please call 101 quoting crime reference 54240139853.
