A main road through Highworth remains closed after a house partially collapsed.

Emergency services were called to the A361 Westrop on Thursday evening (24 October).

Part of a terraced cottage appears to have fallen away and formed a pile of rubble in the front garden, leaving fears the whole property could collapse.

Specially trained firefighters – wearing orange overalls – were deployed at the scene, evacuating the residents of adjourning homes.

The road, which is closed between St Michael’s Avenue and the junction for Westrop, remains closed this morning (Friday) over concerns about the structural integrity of the building.

Swindon Borough Council were on scene alongside fire crews. It’s believed a structural engineer carried out an assessment of the damage and risk to the public.

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called to Westrop in Highworth at 9.47pm last night (24 October) after the front of a terraced house partially collapsed.

“We mobilised a crew and a technical rescue team from Stratton; on arrival, they found that the occupants of the house were all outside safely.

“Firefighters remained on scene to support those affected and to isolate the utilities, with a crew from Swindon taking over at midnight.

“Gas engineers attended to fully isolate the supply from the road. Our stop was at 2.29am.”
