The M4 is closed near Swindon as police investigate a serious crash.

Emergency services were called to a road traffic collision involving a car and a lorry at around 1am this morning (Friday).

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance attended the scene, with the helicopter touching down on the carriageway.

One casualty was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford for urgent care. Further details about those caught up in the incident are unclear at this stage.

The motorway – between junctions 14 and 15 – was closed in both directions, but has since reopened eastbound.

The westbound carriageway remains closed for investigation work by Wiltshire Police and resurfacing.

In a statement, a spokesperson for National Highways said: “[We] are advising road users that a section of the westbound M4 between Hungerford (J14) – Swindon (J15) is expected to remain closed this morning to allow the road to be resurfaced.

“This follows a serious overnight collision on the westbound carriageway involving a car and a light goods vehicle, which occurred around 1am and involved a closure of both carriageways to allow the air ambulance to land.

“The eastbound carriageway was reopened at 3am but the westbound carriageway remained closed as Wiltshire Police carried out an investigation.

“Assessments are currently being made of the road surface and if any significant resurfacing is necessary the westbound carriageway is expected to be closed throughout this morning’s commute.”
