One man dead and another seriously injured in crash on A303

One man has died and another has been seriously injured in a crash on the A303.

Emergency services were called to a road traffic collision involving a van and a car on the major route in Wiltshire at around 4pm today (Tuesday).

Critical care medics from Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance were among the 999 teams attending the incident north of Chilmark.

The head-on crash involved an a Volkswagen Caravelle van and an Audi A4.

The driver of the Audi, a man aged in his 80s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

An driver of the Volkswagen, a man aged in his 30s, sustained potentially life-changing leg injuries was airlifted to the Major Trauma Centre at Southmead Hospital in Bristol.

The passenger in the Volkswagen, a woman aged in her 20s, was taken to Salisbury District Hospital with minor injuries.

A full-scale forensic collision investigation is being carried out, but no arrests have been made in connection with the crash.

The road is currently closed in both directions between Wylye and Chicklade – and is not likely to reopen until tomorrow morning (Wednesday, 1 May).

Wiltshire Police is warning motorists to avoid the area and find alternative routes.

A spokesperson said: “Drivers please be aware that the A303 near Tisbury is closed in both directions between Wylye and Chicklade following a serious RTC.

“The road will be closed for the foreseeable future. Please find alternate routes.”

A National Highways statement reads: “Due to a serious collision, the A303 in Wiltshire is closed.

“Wiltshire Police are carrying out a full accident investigation.

“It is unknown at present what time this will re-open.”

Any witnesses to the collision, or anyone who may have dashcam footage, is asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Team on 01225 694597 quoting log number 194 of yesterday’s date (30 April). Alternatively, you can contact the team directly by emailing [email protected].

UPDATE 7AM (1 MAY): The road has since reopened in both directions.
