The person found dead in a Swindon lagoon was a teenage boy.

Police were searching for a missing individual when they discovered a body in water behind Cheney Manor Industrial Estate yesterday (Saturday, 20 April).

Officers swarmed the angling lake Raychem Lagoon, off Brindley Close, alongside specialist emergency services as they attempted to recover the body.

Technical rescue firefighters and Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) paramedics were on scene, as was the police helicopter from Bristol. Read more >

A male’s body was recovered from the water and he was pronounced dead.

Wiltshire 999s can today (Sunday) reveal that the deceased was a 17-year-old local boy.

Investigations are ongoing into the circumstances around the teen’s death, and people have been asked not to not to speculate.

In a statement yesterday, a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “We have set up a cordon near the lagoon in Rodbourne, Swindon, following the discovery of a male body.

“While conducting a missing person investigation in Swindon, officers in conjunction with our emergency services partners located a body in a lagoon near Cheney Manor Industrial Estate at around 4pm today.

“Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, the person was declared dead at the scene”

They continued: “Although it is still early stages in our investigation, we do not believe there to be any suspicious circumstances and no risk to the public.

“The person’s next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this sad time.

“We would ask for people not to speculate on the circumstances of the incident and please avoid the area to allow for enquiries to be carried out.”
