Eight people have been arrested after a ‘hammer attack’ on a boy at a school in Swindon.

Police were called to a disorder outside St Joseph’s Catholic College in Ocotal Way at around 3.15pm on Tuesday afternoon (12 March).

A 14-year-old boy was attacked by a group of young males brandishing weapons. It’s understood one of the weapons used to assault the victim was a hammer.

He sustained injuries that required hospital treatment, but are being described as “minor” and he has since been discharged.

Officers have since arrested eight teenagers – aged between 12 to 18 – on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent.

Six of those arrested have been released on conditional bail, pending further enquiries. The other two suspects remain in custody for questioning.

Detective Inspector Phillippa Sharpley said: “This attack on one person by a group, some of whom were carrying weapons, is extremely concerning and will not be tolerated.

“Our thoughts are very much with the victim, who required hospital treatment.

“For this to have taken place outside a school, as children were leaving with their parents, is sure to have caused a great deal of concern in the community, however this is being dealt with robustly and with the full force of the law.

“If you witnessed what took place or are aware of any mobile phone footage of the incident then please contact us as a matter of urgency.”

If you can help, please call Wiltshire Police on 101 quoting log 54240028985. You can also give information anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
