A Wiltshire police officer fled after crashing on a blue light run in Chippenham.

PC Peter Lawson was involved in a road traffic collision involving two cars on the A4 Avenue La Fleche on the morning of 7 December last year.

The 49-year-old – who previously worked as a police driver trainer but has since resigned from the force – was driving a marked police van on blue lights and failed stop at the scene.

He was subsequently identified as the officer involved and the case was referred to Wiltshire Police’s Professional Standards Department – Lawson was subsequently suspended from the force.

At trial at Bristol Magistrates’ Court on Monday (13 November), he was found guilty of failing to stop at the scene of a road traffic collision and driving without due care and attention.

Lawson, of Anzio Road, Devizes, was fined £600 in total and his licence was endorsed with five points. He must also pay Crown costs of £775 and a surcharge of £480.

Detective Superintendent Liz Coles said: “We expect police officers to reflect the highest standards of conduct while carrying out their duties.

“Clearly Peter Lawson’s illegal actions fell far short of the expectations that the public should expect of a serving police officer.

“His actions have potentially damaging consequences in terms of the trust and confidence of the communities we serve.”

Following the conclusion criminal proceedings, misconduct proceedings will take place in due course.
