An armed police officer who shot a man in Swindon will not face disciplinary action.

57-year-old Graham Trinder, known as Tommy locally, died after being shot in Summers Street, Rodbourne, in November 2020 – sparking an investigation by the police watchdog.

As reported by Wiltshire 999s at the time, it is understood he brandished a rifle – believed to be an air weapon – at an armed officer responding to reports of a disturbance.

Shortly after the fatal incident, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said the police had been called to reports of “two men arguing in the street”.

A spokesperson for the IOPC said: “We again offer our condolences to the family of Graham Trinder for their sad loss.

“Our independent investigation concluded in October last year and we have shared our findings with the Coroner, Wiltshire Police and Mr Trinder’s family.

“At the end of our investigation, no disciplinary proceedings have been brought against any police officer.”

The IOPC said it would not release its findings until after an inquest is held.

The police shooting happened at around 2am, with Tommy being pronounced dead following approximately one hour of CPR – administered by police and paramedics.

A “non-police issue firearm” was recovered from the scene.
