An investigation is underway after an elderly woman was found dead in a care home garden.

The resident, aged in her 90s, was discovered on the grounds of Coombe End Court, in London Road, Marlborough, in the early hours of Friday (7 January).

It’s understood a door alarm was not activated, resulting in the vulnerable woman being able to exit the care home – owned by The Orders of St John Care Trust (OSJCT) – undetected.

A spokesperson for the Trust told Wiltshire 999s that a “full investigation has commenced to determine the facts surrounding the incident”.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC), Wiltshire Council and Charity Commission have been informed.

Coombe End Court is a dementia-registered care home with an overall rating of Good by the CQC in January 2020.

“OSJCT is deeply saddened by the unexpected passing of one of our residents at Coombe End Court in Marlborough on Friday 7 January, following an incident at the home”, the spokesperson continued.

“Our deepest and heartfelt sympathies are with the family and loved ones at this difficult time.

“The care and safety of our residents is our highest priority, and we are committed to working transparently with all authorities and the family to ensure that we get a clear understanding of what happened.

“Our dedicated and compassionate teams work tirelessly to provide the best possible loving care, with many residents becoming like family to them during their stay with us.

“To this end we have put in place appropriate support for all of our colleagues based at the home.

“Out of respect for the family, and pending the outcomes of the investigation, we are unable to comment further at this time.”
