A Swindon man who died in a flat blaze in Swindon yesterday has been named locally.

Six fire crews from Swindon, Stratton, Westlea and Royal Wootton Bassett stations battled the flames after being called to the incident in Welcome Avenue in Park North.

Shortly after 10am firefighters rescued four people and a dog from first-floor flats using a ladder, and the rest of the building was evacuated whilst 999 crews worked.

Local man, Richard ‘Lowie’ Lowe, in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. His family were informed a short time later.

Wiltshire Police say the cause of the fire is under investigation. At this early stage, officers believe it to have been non-suspicious.

Fire investigators, CID detectives and forensics were at the property later into yesterday evening as they probe the death. Police remain at the scene this morning.

A spokesperson for the force said: “We are working with colleagues from Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service to establish the cause of the fire and a cordon will remain in place while this work continues. Swindon Borough Council are also at the scene.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Wiltshire Police on 101 and quote log 88 of today’s date. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be left anonymously.”
