Police superintendent Phil Staynings says significant steps are being made in attempts to tackle violent crime in Penhill and Pinehurst following good work by officers in the area over the weekend.
For the second weekend in succession, officers from the Stratton, Central North and West Swindon Neighbourhood Team were out in force following recent violent incidents in the areas.
During Sunday evening’s patrols, officers located a vehicle that sparked suspicions. Inside the vehicle, a large amount of class A and B drugs were located along with multiple scale sets, deal bags and false plates. The drugs seized are believed to have an estimated street value of approximately £6,500.
Stop searches were also carried out and a weapon seized from another vehicle during the patrols.
On Saturday, further proactive activity resulted in an 18-year-old man being arrested on suspicion of two counts of assault on an emergency worker, possession with intent to supply class A drugs and possession of cannabis.
Supt Staynings said: “Officers have been working hard to maintain a visible presence in the Penhill and Pinehurst areas following some serious incidents of violence in the area – it is hoped that their presence will provide reassurance for the law abiding residents in the area and also act as a deterrent for those intent on committing crime.
“This is only the start, but our increased presence has been met with positive feedback from the local community.
“Drugs activity is often associated with violent crime therefore this was a significant stop by officers and their vigilance combined with the information provided by the community has prevented these drugs from reaching the hands of vulnerable drug users in our community.
“I would like to stress again that this activity is concentrated around a small group of individuals and we will continue to meet this type of behaviour with robust action.
“Over the coming days and ahead of the Bank Holiday weekend, officers will continue to conduct regular patrols of the area. As we move into September, staff will be meeting with local schools as we continue our partnership approach to this issue.
