Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) has deleted a photo it shared of a firefighter appearing to feed a pony in the New Forest.
Since 2023 it is been illegal to feed and pet free-roaming ponies and donkeys due to a Public Spaces Protection Order. Fines of up to £1,000 can be imposed for breaches.
According to the New Forest National Park Authority, the animals pose a risk of harm to the public – with advice being not to approach them when visiting.
In July The New Forest Commoners Defence Association confirmed that a young girl was seriously injured after being kicked by a pony in Brockenhurst.
Despite the ban, a firefighter from a Wiltshire fire station – who was helping tackle the recent wildfire there – was pictured seemingly giving a wild pony food or drink from a helmet.
The description alongside the image read: “We could post another photo of fire appliances and burning countryside, but instead we thought we’d share this one — one of our firefighters helping a New Forest pony through the heatwave.
“Behind every incident, there are often moments like this that remind us why our firefighters do what they do.”
The photograph was posted on social media and received mostly positive comments. Though some pointed out that his actions were unacceptable and potentially unlawful.
One person wrote: “This is a lovely picture but what message is it sending to the multitude of visitors who are visiting the forest?
“No… they should not be approaching, feeding and watering the wild animals. This is giving them the go-ahead to do just that!”
While another added: “Well that’s just illegal isn’t it. Should be setting an example, people get hurt because they think its safe to touch and see them up close.”
Many others thanked the firefighter for providing sustenance to the pony amid what is a lengthy dry period, labelling him a hero.
However, DWFRS deleted the post a short time later. A spokesperson confirmed that it was removed and crews were briefed about the Public Spaces Protection Order.
The service said that they were reminded not to feed, water or touch the ponies when in the New Forest.
