Swindon MP and Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has revealed she spent a night in the A&E department of a London hospital earlier this week after falling ill.

In a social media post, the politician said she had been unwell over the last week and had been forced to cancel a number of engagements in both her constituency and her role as Secretary of State for Transport.

She said: “I haven’t been well in the last week (spent a long night in the A&E of a London hospital on Tuesday) but am hopefully on the road to recovery now.

“I’m really sorry to have had to pull out of a number of consistency commitments, as well as some in my capacity as Secretary of State for Transport. We’ll get them back in the diary as soon as possible.”

Alexander said she hopes to resume Department for Transport duties on Monday, carrying out a number of tasks online, before returning to Swindon on Wednesday.

Despite still recovering, she said she was determined to attend her scheduled coffee morning at Dorcan Church – St Paul’s and St Timothy’s on Saturday.

Heidi Alexander, MP for Swindon South and Secretary of State for Transport, said: “Despite occasional winces and some slower than normal walking, I was however determined to do my coffee morning at Dorcan Church Notice Board: St Paul’s and St Timothy’s today.

“Thanks to everyone from Covingham, Nythe and Coleview who came along. Lots to follow up on relating to roads, speeding, anti-social behaviour and more, so watch this space.

“Good to be able to talk through some issues relating to the town centre too.

“When it comes to the big issues that are critical to the future of the town, party politics will always be put to one side for me and I’ll always be focussed on doing what’s best for Swindon.”

Alexander did not disclose the nature of her illness.
