Drivers are being urged to take extra care after concerns were raised about vehicles travelling too fast through floodwater in a Wiltshire village.
PC Evans visited the Coombe Bisset after helping to tow a stranded vehicle from the flood, warning some motorists about their speed.
While many were driving cautiously, some were travelling too fast – creating large bow waves, which caused further damage to homes already affected by flooding.
PC Evans said: “Please take extra care when driving through flooded areas. Hidden hazards, such as potholes, can cause serious damage to your vehicle.
“Floodwater can also affect your engine and electrical systems and may even lead to brake failure.
“If possible, avoid standing water altogether. Do not attempt to drive through moving floodwater or water that is more than 10cm (4 inches) deep.
“Allow approaching vehicles to pass first, then drive slowly and steadily—around 3–4 mph—to avoid creating a bow wave.
“Use slightly higher revs than normal and keep the vehicle moving to prevent stalling. After leaving the water, test your brakes as soon as it is safe to do so.
“Fast-moving water is extremely powerful. Please take care.”
Police are reminding road users that driving considerately through affected areas can help prevent further damage to properties and reduce the risk of breakdowns.
