A BMW driver has been arrested after crashing into a substation in Melksham.
Homes and businesses in the town were starved of electricity following the road traffic collision in Coronation Road this morning (Monday).
A silver BMW 3 Series left the road and ended up embedded in a substation at around 9.50am – with emergency services called to the scene.
SSE engineers were forced to turn off the power supply while the incident was dealt with. According to locals, Spa Medical Centre had to turn away patients.
Wiltshire Police said that the driver of the car was not present when officers arrived, sparking a search. He was located nearby and detained.
Following a breath test, he was arrested on suspicion of drink driving. He was further arrested on suspicion of driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.
The 35-year-old has been taken to hospital as a precaution. After being assessed and receiving treatment, he’ll be taken into custody for questioning.
The force confirmed that the road has reopened following vehicle recovery and an assessment of damaged roadside furniture.
