A weather warning has been issued by the Met Office as Storm Chandra is set to bring heavy rain to Wiltshire and the wider South West England.

The storm is forecast to bring outbreaks of rain, heavy at times, from Monday afternoon through to Tuesday morning. Conditions are then expected to turn to heavy showers later on Tuesday.

The Met Office says rainfall totals of between twenty and thirty millimetres are likely across many areas.

Higher ground could see significantly more, with fifty to eighty millimetres possible in places such as Dartmoor, Exmoor and Bannau Brycheiniog, also known as the Brecon Beacons.

With ground already saturated following recent wet weather, the additional rainfall could increase the risk of flooding. The Met Office warns that homes and businesses may be flooded, potentially causing damage to buildings.

Transport disruption is also possible. Delays or cancellations to bus and train services may occur, while spray and surface water could make driving conditions difficult and lead to road closures.

Some rural communities could become cut off if roads flood. There is also a risk of power cuts and disruption to other services, alongside the potential for landslides in vulnerable locations.

Strong southeasterly winds are expected to accompany the rain, adding to the potential impacts across the region.

Residents are being urged to check whether their property is at risk of flooding and to prepare a flood plan and emergency kit if needed. Drivers are advised to check road conditions before travelling, while public transport users should keep an eye on bus and train timetables.

The Met Office has also advised people to prepare for possible power cuts by having torches, batteries and a charged power pack available. Weather warnings may change quickly, and people are encouraged to stay up to date with the latest local forecast.
