More children have been seen playing on a frozen lake – with serious concerns for their safety raised by local residents.
This time, kids were spotted on the ice-covered water at The Richardson and Amey Nature Reserve in Lechlade on Tuesday (6 January).
It comes after schoolchildren were found to be using a frozen lake off Sherrer Lane in Tadpole Garden Village as a makeshift ice rink.
Lechlade resident Catherine Hitchman posted on Facebook: ‘Very dangerous – playing on ice at nature reserve by Perrinsfield.
‘This was a couple of hours ago but people have checked nearer the time, including myself, boys no longer there and no signs that the ice had recently been broken. A tragedy waiting to happen.’
The Royal Life Saving Society UK has issued a warning to people to stay away from frozen lakes, ponds and rivers during cold weather.
The charity said frozen water may look solid but is often dangerously thin, with a high risk of breaking without warning.
If someone falls through ice, members of the public are urged to call 999 immediately and ask for the fire and rescue service.
People are advised not to go onto the ice under any circumstances, as this can put more lives at risk.
The charity said anyone witnessing such an incident should reassure the casualty and encourage them to remain still to conserve energy.
If possible, bystanders should attempt to reach the person from the bank using a rope, branch or items of clothing tied together.
Where reaching is not possible, something that floats should be slid across the ice to help keep the person afloat until emergency services arrive.
The Royal Life Saving Society UK said these simple actions can help prevent further casualties while specialist rescue teams are on their way.
