Hundreds of Chippenham homes are without power after a substation explosion.

Firefighters were called to Gloucester Close, in the Queens Crescent area, shortly after 6pm this evening (Tuesday).

A substation burst into flames and at least one explosion was heard – as the incident knocked out the power in the vicinity.

Two crews – from Chippenham and Corsham – remained on scene at 8pm.

Firefighters also accessed the garden of a house in Queens Crescent to ensure the fire wouldn’t spread to nearby property.

In a statement, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “SSE are currently in attendance and are working to resolve the issue that has taken place this evening.

“It will be approximately 2 hours until the electricity returns. For any queries please contact SSE directly.”

The power cut initially affected hundreds of homes across the town. The outage was resolved for most, but approximately 80 homes remain without electricity.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks have engineers in attendance and they are working to resolve the issue and restore power.

A spokesperson said: “We’re sorry about the power cut in the area. The power cut is affecting 80 properties in the area shown on the map.

“We are working with our engineers to fix the problem as quickly as possible, and will keep you updated here on Power Track.

“Engineers are on the way and will arrive in the area at 18:45 06/01/2026.

“When they get there, they’ll work hard to fix the problem as quickly as possible. We’ll keep you updated with any new information.

“At this stage, we’re aiming to have your power back on by 23:00 06/01/2026.”
