A woman’s died after a lorry’s tyre burst while travelling along the A420 between Swindon and Oxford yesterday afternoon, causing a head-on collision.

A Scania Topline HGV was travelling along the road between the A338 Frilford Roundabout and the turn-off for Tubney at about 2.15pm, when it suffered a tyre blowout.

The driver lost control of the lorry and hit an oncoming white Mazda CX-5 car.

The driver of the Mazda, a 51-year-old woman from Buckingham, died at the scene. The driver of the lorry sustained minor injuries but did not go to hospital.

Investigating officer PC Robert Turpin, of the Roads Policing Unit based at Bicester, said: “This incident happened at a time when there would be have been many drivers using this major route.

“We are seeking witnesses who haven’t already provided their details to the police to come forward if they saw anything relevant to the collision.

“Our thoughts are with the family of the car driver who sadly died at the scene. They are being supported by specially trained officers.”

The section of the A420 affected was closed until just after midnight while the lorry was recovered and police carried out an investigation at the scene.
