A woman has died following a crash involving five vehicles on the A350 in Chippenham.
Emergency services raced to the major route between Chequers Roundabout and Lackham Roundabout at around 5pm yesterday afternoon (Friday, 1 December).
A white DAF lorry, a black Audi A3, a white Fiat 500, a blue Ford Fiesta and a black Peugeot Boxer van were all involved in the fatal road traffic collision.
The driver of the Audi, a woman aged in her 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
It’s understood the lorry and the Audi were first to impact close to the Saltersford Lane unmarked pedestrian crossing, followed by the Fiat, Ford and Peugeot van.
Several other people were described as “walking wounded”. Nobody else is believed to sustained any significant injuries, but two were taken to hospital for further assessment and treatment.
A lengthy forensic collision investigation was carried out by specially-trained officers overnight – and the road will remain closed until approximately 10am this morning (Saturday).
A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “Her next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this extremely difficult time.
“The road is currently still closed and is expected to remain closed for another hour while the carriageway is cleared.
