A woman has appeared in court charged with stabbing her ex-partner to death in her own home.

Helen Shakespeare, 53, faces allegations of murder and conspiring with others to commit murder.

At Swindon Magistrates’ Court this morning, the defendant, of Strawberry Fields in Easterton, near Devizes, was told that the hearing was purely administrative.

Wearing a grey tracksuit, she spoke only to confirm her name, date to birth and address.

Kate Prince, prosecuting, told the bench that Shakespeare “has stabbed her ex-partner at her home address, which has resulted in his death”.

48-year-old Raymond Groves, from Hartcliffe, Bristol, died of stab wounds.

Magistrates cannot grant bail for a charge of murder, and the case must be sent to a crown court.

Presiding justice Amanda Lee told Shakespeare that she would be remanded in custody, and will near appear before Winchester Crown Court on 9 July.

Detectives have also arrested a man aged in his 30s on suspicion of murder.

A woman aged in her 20s was arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and conspiracy to commit murder.

Both suspects remain in custody for questioning.

Det Insp Deb Hatch said: “I’d like to send my condolences to the family and friends of the man involved. Our investigation remains ongoing.”
