A protest against asylum seeker hotels, which is due to take place in Swindon tomorrow, will be facilitated by Wiltshire Police.
A group of activists, named The Great British National Protest, have published a long list of events taking place across the UK on Saturday (30 August).
The list includes Swindon – and confirms it is due to happen at the Thistle Express Hotel in Islington Street, in the town centre, from 12pm.
A spokesperson said: “If this isn’t a “revolution” then tell me what is?!?! Just look at this list of confirmed events this weekend. We’ve never seen anything like this.”
Stand Up to Racism has confirmed that its supporters will be attending as part of a counter-protest.
“Stop the racists and far right! Refugees are welcome in Swindon”, a spokesperson for the group said.
Wiltshire Police has said it will facilited the protest, but warns people who engage in criminal activity – like violence – will face the consequences.
Assistant Chief Constable Deb Smith said: “We are aware of social media commentary regarding the potential for protest activity in central Swindon tomorrow (30/08).
“We will always facilitate lawful protest – but we will not tolerate criminal behaviour.
“We have a proportionate policing operation in place, supported by our partner agencies, to ensure our communities are protected and safeguarded in the event of any tensions and we will deal swiftly and robustly with anyone intent on causing crime or violent disorder.”
