A Wiltshire councillor has been arrested on suspicion of sexual communication with a child, it has emerged.
Tidworth Town Council has confirmed that it was made aware of the serious allegation on Saturday 20 February.
The town councillor, in his 60s, was arrested later that evening after it was passed to Wiltshire Police.
Mayor Mark Connolly told the Salisbury Journal the council would “assist the investigation” but added that it’s not thought the allegation was “in connection with his role as a councillor”.
The man has reportedly been asked to resign from the council pending the investigation’s outcome but the council have no power to remove him at this early stage.
A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: “We have arrested a man in his 60s from Tidworth on suspicion of sexual communication with a child.
“He has been released on conditional bail while our enquiries continue.”
