Wiltshire Council has issued guidance on how people can best support anyone they see sleeping rough as colder weather approaches.

Residents who are concerned about a rough sleeper are encouraged to share details with StreetLink.

The service passes information to the council so officers can speak with the individual, offer a warm place to stay and arrange ongoing support.

The authority will share advice and awareness messages on its social media channels throughout November and December to highlight the issue.

Wiltshire Council works with rough sleepers throughout the year, alongside local charities that provide both immediate help and long-term support.

According to the council, early morning outreach teams have supported 420 rough sleepers since November last year.

Officers visit people on the streets, offer hot drinks and discuss the support available. Follow-up appointments are then arranged to explore accommodation options.

More than 18 people are currently being supported into short-term accommodation in the county. A further 68 rough sleepers are receiving help from tenancy officers to maintain long-term accommodation.

Cllr Adrian Foster, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “Seeing someone sleeping rough is heartbreaking, and while giving money might feel like the easiest way to help, the most effective action is to report through Streetlink.

“This allows us to respond quickly and provide the right support.

“Donations to local homeless charities also make a real difference, funding practical help and advice.

“Many rough sleepers have experienced deep trauma, so building trust takes time.

“Our outreach team works patiently and compassionately to help each individual find a warm, safe place to stay.”
