A man has been charged with seriously injuring a cyclist in a hit-and-run in Swindon.

22-year-old Tyler Webb appeared at Swindon Magistrates’ Court this morning (Wednesday).

Pauline Lambert, prosecuting, alleged that the defendant was driving a red Ford Transit when he struck a stationary cyclist – who was wearing a high-visibility tabard – before fleeing the scene.

It’s claimed he was driving at double the 30mph speed limit when the collision took place near the BMW Plant on Bridge End Road at 10.30pm on 10 June last year.

The male cyclist sustained significant injuries – including a broken shoulder, leg and ribs along with a head injury. He required numerous surgeries and is still unable to work six months later.

Webb did not enter pleas to the charges, which included causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving whilst unfit through drink and failing to stop after a road accident.

Emma Thacker appeared for the defence but made no representations.

The case was sent to Swindon Crown Court. The defendant, of Reids Piece, Purton, was released on unconditional bail to appear for a plea and trial preparation hearing on 10 February.
