Two people have been arrested in Swindon after a driver crashed during a police chase.
Officers attempted to stop the silver Vauxhall Insignia after what was described as “over-exuberant driving” at around 1.40am on Sunday (9 February).
The driver failed to stop after coming off the M4 and onto Great Western Way at high speed – and a pursuit was authorised, with traffic cops and a dog unit involved.
The car was swerving across the carriageway and officers smelled cannabis coming from inside the cabin.
The vehicle was pursued for four miles, before it ploughed into a bollard at the entrance to a subway in Tydeman Street, Gorse Hill.
The driver, and a passenger, then attempted to flee on foot – but were detained a short time later.
Two men were detained and the driver was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop for police and failing to provide a specimen for analysis. They since been released on bail.
Jahred Tafari, 25, of Beech Avenue, was a passenger in the car and has been charged with possession of cannabis. He is due to appear at Swindon Magistrates’ Court on 19 March.
