The final phase of works has started in Trowbridge town centre, with a road closure in place until next month.
Roundstone Street is shut between its junctions with Polebarn Road and Church Street/Silver Street to allow Wiltshire Council to carry out civil engineering works.
Wales & West Utilities is also using the closure to complete planned maintenance on a key gas main, reducing the need for future disruption.
The works are part of a 12-month programme that started in February, and is currently ahead of schedule.
When complete, the council says the project will improve walking and cycling access, enhance public spaces and support the regeneration of Trowbridge town centre.
During the Roundstone Street works, temporary traffic management measures will be in place 24 hours a day, while work takes place between 7am and 7pm, Monday to Saturday.
Wiltshire Council says access to properties and businesses may be restricted during the works, but traffic management operatives will be on-site to assist those affected. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout.
Assuming everything goes to plan, the road will reopen on Tuesday, 9 September, but work on the overall scheme will continue.
Cllr Martin Smith, Wiltshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, Streetscene and Flooding, said he was grateful to residents and businesses for their patience during these critical works.
“These works are a key part of a wider vision to make Trowbridge town centre more accessible, attractive and sustainable for everyone who lives, works and visits here,” he said.
“We’ve also taken the opportunity to coordinate with Wales & West Utilities so they can carry out planned maintenance on their gas infrastructure during our scheduled road closure. This joined-up approach helps reduce the need for future disruption and makes the most of the existing traffic management arrangements already in place.”
And he said the recent dry spell meant the end date of the overall programme will be sooner than originally intended.
“There’s more good news too,” Cllr Smith continued.
“Thanks to favourable weather conditions and a recent review of the construction programme, we’re able to bring forward the final phase of the scheme.
“Originally planned for October to March, this phase started yesterday, and it is anticipated that the entire project will be completed by late autumn.”
