A Swindon town centre road has been closed following a burst water main.
Police and the fire service were called to the scene in Commercial Road this morning (Thursday, 14 July).
Wiltshire Police is advising motorists to avoid the area while Thames Water fix the burst pipe.
In a short statement, they wrote: “Please be aware of a road closure on Commercial Road in Swindon due to a burst water main.
“Closures will be in place for a number of hours. Drivers are asked to avoid the area if possible and seek alternative routes.”
Comments left on social media by local residents suggest the burst water main is a huge upgrade from the metal water fountain in Canal Walk.
“Wow, impressive new water feature. It makes an upgrade from the boring one in town which has always switched off now”, one person wrote.
Another said: “Finally a new decent water fountin (sic).”
Another person wrote: “Swindon’s new water feature in Commercial Road switched on in time for the heatwave.”
Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is also in attendance, confirming the burst main happened at a hydrant.
It said: “Road Closure Commercial Road, Swindon. This is due to a burst main at a hydrant. Please avoid the area and find alternative routes.”
