A man’s been shot in the leg by armed police in West Swindon this afternoon.
Two air ambulances and the police helicopter were seen over the area at around 5.30pm after local residents heard officers repeatedly shouting ‘put down the gun’, followed by gunshots.
It happened in Ridge Green, off Shaw Lane, after police descended on a small white lorry.
Wiltshire Air Ambulance and Great Western Air Ambulance both attended the scene.
The incident has been referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct.
A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “Police officers and colleagues from the ambulance service are currently dealing with an ongoing incident in the Ridge Green area of Swindon.
“We were called following a report of an armed robbery in Rivermead Industrial Estate, Westlea, shortly after 5pm today (16/06).
“A man, who was armed with what was believed to be a handgun, had stolen a lorry.
“This vehicle was intercepted by armed police in the Ridge Green area and subsequently a police firearm was discharged.
“A man in his 50s has suffered a leg wound and has been airlifted to hospital for treatment. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.”
