55 firefighters were deployed to a blaze at a hotel in Swindon this morning (Monday).
Emergency services were called to The Campanile on Delta Business Park at around 2.40am following reports of smoke issuing from the roof.
11 fire crews – from Westlea, Swindon, Stratton, Royal Wootton Bassett, Cricklade, Marlborough, Chippenham, Malmesbury, Ramsbury and Calne – were sent to the incident.
Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) said that an aerial ladder platform appliance from Swindon and an incident command unit from Devizes also attended.
The hotel was evacuated, with around 50 guests and staff said to have congregated outside in the cold as eight firefighters wearing breathing apparatus ventured into the property to battle the flames.
The fire, which was contained to one corner of the building’s roof space, was extinguished using two hose reel jets. It’s believed only part of the roof and a few top-level rooms were affected.
A DWFRS spokesperson confirmed that people “were allowed back into a downstairs room once we knew it was safe”.
Adding: “The incident was scaled back after about two hours, and the stop was at 6.10am, with all appliances having left the scene by 6.45am.
“The fire is believed to have started accidentally.”
