A Swindon man who barged into his ex-girlfriend’s home and bit her on the nose has been jailed.

26-year-old Kirklan Smith breached a non-molestation order and turned up at the victim’s address, pushing his way inside before launching a violent assault.

The defendant, of Marlborough Road, left the 24-year-old feeling violated and fearing for her life, Swindon Crown Court heard on 23 November.

In a statement, she said he was “full-on biting my nose” and “I never expected anyone to do that to me”. She added: “I actually thought is that it for me?”

Chris Smyth, prosecuting, said that Smith used a weapon – his teeth – on the woman and the attack, on 4 June this year, was aggravated by the fact it occurred in her own home.

He said that the former couple’s young son did not witness the incident, but was present in the property at the time – and heard it ongoing from another room.

Bethan Chichester, defending, said that her client was struggling with this mental health, having attempted suicide in the past – which “no doubt had an impact on his relationships”.

She said Smith’s new partner was in court supporting him and are due to marry in May, with the intention of starting a family together.

Miss Chichester added that he works in the laundry room in prison, where he has been on remanded awaiting sentence – and is considered “trusted”.

The court heard that the defendant was previously jailed for 48 months for the supply of Class A drugs.

Describing the assault as “very unpleasant”, Judge Tait handed Smith a two-year sentence behind bars. He also imposed a five-year restraining order to protect the victim.

He said: “He should never have been there in the first place. For what ever reason you went there, you went there knowing you shouldn’t be there… you showed a wilful disregard for the family court.

“A bite on the nose, especially with the victim being a young women, is a serious matter.

“If you’re serious about making things up with your son, then do so, show that you are capable of behaving yourself. I don’t care if you let yourself down, but don’t let [your family] down.”
