A man who broke a pedestrian’s leg by deliberately running him over in Salisbury has been jailed for nearly seven years.

Ashley Sherred, 33, of Southampton Road, Salisbury, appeared at Salisbury Crown Court today (Friday) where he was sentenced for a number of serious offences.

He previously pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent and dangerous driving in relation to two separate incidents in Salisbury.

On 10 May, Sherred was seen driving a blue Ford Fiesta recklessly in Pinewood Close, Bemerton Heath – performing wheel spins and handbrake turns.

When a local resident came out to confront him over the antisocial behaviour, Sherred mounted the pavement and deliberately collided with the man, who is in his 40s. The victim suffered a broken leg.

Sherred fled the scene but was arrested later that day. The vehicle was located the following day in a nearby residential street.

In a separate incident on 31 August last year, Sherred was seen driving dangerously in Salisbury city centre. After failing to stop for police near Fisherton Street, he led officers on a pursuit through Bemerton Heath and Wilton, during which he collided with a fence.

When eventually located at the Dairyhouse Bridge Caravan Site, Sherred rammed a police vehicle multiple times before fleeing on foot.

A police dog was brought in to assist, with the defendant threatening to snap its neck as he was arrested after being found hiding in dense shrubbery.

Sherred was jailed for six years and ten months. He was also disqualified from driving for four years, which will begin upon his release from prison.

Investigating officer DC Dan Smith from South CID said: “Sherred’s actions in Bemerton Heath in May have left the innocent victim with significant injuries and I’m pleased Sherred now faces justice for his actions that day.

“The victim simply wanted to speak with him in relation to Sherred’s antisocial driving in a quiet, residential part of Salisbury, and Sherred has instead used his vehicle as a weapon to collide with him.

“The victim suffered a significant leg injury but it could have been much worse.

“I would like to thank the victim and the wider public for their support with that investigation, which has seen Sherred brought before the court today.

“Sherred was also sentenced for an incident in Salisbury last year, when he drove a vehicle across Salisbury potentially intoxicated before ramming a police vehicle, leaving the officer in fear for his own safety.

“During that incident, he failed to stop for officers, collided with a fence, drove the wrong way down a one-way street and had several near misses, before eventually decamping from his vehicle, when he was arrested.

“We will not tolerate driving and violence like this in Wiltshire.”
