Firefighters are tackling a major blaze at a property in Melksham, with at least seven crews in attendance at the incident.

Emergency services were called to a first-floor flat Sangster Avenue at around 8pm today (Saturday), flames completely destroying the roof of the building.

Fire appliances, including around six fire engines and two aerial ladder platforms, are working to bring the inferno under control.

The occupants, a family, are understood to have escaped the property as the fire took hold.

Residents are being advised to avoid the area while the incident is ongoing. Locals living nearby are urged to keep windows and doors closed due to heavy smoke in the vicinity.

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We are currently dealing with a property fire on Milton Avenue which is causing a large amount of smoke.

“Local residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed.”
