Roads closed in Malmesbury due to underground fire, police say

Some Malmesbury roads have been closed this afternoon after an underground fire broke out while an electrical company worked to fix a fault.

High Street and Gloucester Street have been closed from 3pm today, 3 June.

Pedestrians can still use the crossing at the top of the High Street and access Bird Cage Walk and the Abbey, but there is no pedestrian or vehicular access between that crossing and where Bird Cage Walk begins (i.e. under the mirror).

Wiltshire Council shall be on site shortly to add further road closure signs to hopefully inform people further from the incident, according to police.

There was an attempt to rectify an electrical fault earlier this morning which resulted in an underground fire. The electricity company state that Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service attended and put out the fire but that there was a further risk of fire in the street which could pose a risk to pedestrians and motorists.

Due to this concern, the road was closed by Police to protect the public and facilitate the repairs needed to make the area safe and to keep those workers safe.
