A road is closed and locals are facing a power cut following a crash in Chippenham.
A van smashed into a telegraph pole in London Road at around 1am this morning (Saturday).
Police and fire crews attended the scene, closing the road in both directions near the junction between Hardens Close and Stanley Lane.
It’s not clear if anyone was injured or arrested at this stage. Wiltshire Police has been contacted for comment – an update will follow in due course.
The incident has caused a localised power outage for some residents, with power not expected to be restored until mid-afternoon.
It’s understood the power has been turned off by engineers for safety reasons. The telegraph pole could fall if the van is moved.
In a statement, the electricity firm said: “We’re very sorry for the power cut and are aware of a fault on our local network affecting several homes.”
It adds: “This means that you and some of your neighbours will be affected by the power cut, but not all – this is why you may notice some of your neighbours have power when you do not. It’s not uncommon to see 1 in 3 homes affected.
“Our engineers are in your local area and working hard to get your power restored as soon as possible. At this stage, based on initial investigations, we’re aiming to restore your power by 15:00 23/03/2024.”
The road will remain closed until the telegraph pole is repaired and the area is safe.
