Riot vans patrol Swindon as businesses take security measures ahead of rave

Businesses in some areas of Swindon have taken additional security measures on the advice of police following reports that an illegal rave will be hosted tonight.

Two riot vans are on patrol carrying officers ready to disrupt the music event which is due to take place overnight.

The Marriott Hotel, Nationwide and Intel, all in Pipers Way, have tried to secure their entrances using barriers and metal fencing.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “Enquiries are currently being conducted to determine the scale of this event and the resources required to disperse any crowds and ensure no offences are committed.

“There will be an increased police presence in the area over the weekend as officers conduct high visibility and reassurance patrols and please be reassured that we will take action against those who fail to comply.

“We would like to remind the public that large scale events which have not been granted the relevant permissions by authorities are illegal and will be dealt with as such.

“We are also working with our key partners including other emergency services and Swindon Borough Council to manage any possible large gathering.

“It is also important to stress that government restrictions on socialising in large groups still remain in place. If you are planning to attend this or other similar events, we would strongly advise you not to do so.

“We fully understand the inconvenience and negative impact incidents of this nature can have on anyone living in close proximity and we would encourage landowners in the Swindon Borough area to ensure their land is secure to help prevent incidents of this nature taking place.”
