A retail worker sexually abused a five-year-old girl as her parents shopped.

Joseph Marriott, an already convicted sex offender, was working at a store in Salisbury when he lured his young victim into a back room in February this year.

The 33-year-old then made the girl to touch his penis. He was arrested the following day and remanded in custody, and the defendant was later found guilty.

At Swindon Crown Court on 4 September, he was sentenced for causing or inciting a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity.

He was also sentenced for breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), which was in place following a previous sexual offence committed in 2019.

Judge Jason Taylor KC handed Marriott to a ten-year prison term – comprising four years six months imprisonment and five years six months on licence.

The defendant, of of St Andrew’s Road, Salisbury, must also abide by the terms of an indefinite SHPO and will remain on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

DC Billy Baker said: “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the young survivor and her family who have remained resolute and dignified throughout this ordeal; their support has been invaluable in bringing this offender to justice.”
